“Work, love and play are the great balance wheels of man’s being.” -Orison Swett Marden

It's funny how Spring Break always rolls around at just the right time. Whether you're in need of some one-on-one time with your mom and her priceless advice or a full day in bed to catch up on Selena and Justin's romance on Daily Mail, this week off in March is always well-received by anyone and everyone. After a tough week of midterms and seven-page essays, it's time to balance out that hard work with some play.

My final week-long college break was spent in beautiful Montego Bay where my 11 best friends and I shared a house for a week of much-needed R&R. Laying on the floats in the pool gossiping about Scott and Sofia's relationship as if we personally know them and sharing secrets about our own love lives, we took the week to ourselves in the name of self-care away from the stresses and pressures of college studies.

And as I lay in the UV-11-strength sun letting the John Frieda Lightening Spray bleach out my dark winter roots, I realized what self-care really can be.

Self-care isn't always $89 gold-infused face masks and $45 SoulCycle classes.

Sometimes, self-care is skipping the party to go to bed at 9 p.m. or taking the high road in a situation when someone has wronged you.

It's giving yourself permission to take the day off to get to that 11 a.m. yoga class that allows you to truly align your intentions, priorities and goals or laying in a hammock before anyone else is awake to just take it all in.

And finally, it's forgiving yourself for not meeting all of the world's impossible standards and knowing that you are more than enough.

I think the internet's definition of self-care makes the act seem expensive and material, when in fact, self-care is more about positive mental health results than cleared pores and shiny hair.

It's taking three deep breaths when you're stressed. And then grabbing a glass of vino and settling into The Notebook instead of finishing your work right that moment.

Life is all about balance. And self-care is also all about balance, so go exfoliate that skin while you munch on some dark chocolate. Nobody is perfect!

Xx,

M.L.F.
